Could you imagine a high school pistol shooting team? Or skeet team? Or marksmanship team? I'd love for my future children to enjoy the shooting sports. But for some reason this scares people.
But as for why handguns are necessary? You mentioned dangerous wild life but how about the dangers of the inner city? Walking home alone after a long night at work and getting jumped by(insert demographic here). I would want a gun in that situation.
It's more that in the inner city, a hand gun might: allow you to hit innocent bystanders; put you on trial for murder; or make you think you're safe when any idiot you haven't seen yet can shoot you any time.
As to the high school shooting team, or skeet team, why couldn't the guns be stored on site rather than at home?
The real U.S. problem is that there are so many handguns, and other guns out there now that it's hard to imagine effective future gun control of any kind.
