Ok. First, he did say the quote on my signature, so yes, it is a "real quote." Lol.
Nothing he said is heretical. Yes, we believe Jesus did die for all of us. Yes, we can all do good deeds, as we should. Some of the more uber conservative Catholics took it to mean that everyone automatically goes to Heaven, and got upset. But that is not what he said. Personally, I believe atheists can go to Heaven, but technically we don't know for sure and can't infallibly proclaim who does or does not go to Heaven (except the saints). So the Vatican had to make a statement. Regardless of what the Pope says, there are always going to be people who get upset about it, who take it to the extreme to mean something different, or who twist it to mean something else.
