The one who would replace him would likely be lucky to have one or two cards out of the full deck.
In the short run, that might seem to strengthen the tactical game of the republicans right, but in the long run, lack visible opposition of any kind to the republicans right amongst republicans will cause the democrats to fail to lose more often inspite of themselves.
Democrats will lose more battles, but would be carried towards winning more wars by a stronger undercurrent of disgust at the opposition.
