Some ghost documentaries and internet sites suggest that it could be natural and man-made electrical and magnetic impulses that have an effect on our perception. Being a lot closer to home, I would think this would be a more likely cause for visions and "voices" than some crystallized sound from the universe.
I also think people want to feel special, so either they A) really believe a higher power is talking to them or B) make other people believe it because they enjoy wielding power.
