Christian morality is not really based on the Bible, it's based on a conservative view of social norms. The Bible is just window dressing. That's why abolitionists and slavery advocates could both reach for the Bible. Similarly many Christian saints from the middle ages were women who convinced their new husbands to let them remain virgins, but conservative Christians claim it is impossible to rape your wife. And on and on. Christian morality changes with history, but the Bible remains the same.
