Sucks, man. I feel for you, but this seems more a problem with your personnel management.
Scobee was an accurate kicker. We acquired his contract via a trade, because Suisham went down in the HOF game because he is trying to make sideline tackles in the most pointless of the preseason games. Then Garrett Hartley goes down with a hammy pull two weeks later. We acquire Scobee from the Jags, but his contract comes with him. The Jags agree to pay $900k of his $3 mil salary. $2 mil is average for an established veteran kicker.
If you cut a player, his guaranteed salary is still due. Scobee's guaranteed salary was close to $1 mil, but we now have to pay Jacksonville's $900k because they did not agree to pay dead money.
Kickers for the Steelers have to kick in Heinz field, which is the toughest field to kick in due to the confluence of the Monongahela, Ohio, and Allegheny rivers right outside the stadium and the winds that ensue and enter the open end of the stadium. Suish was awesome at it. He was the most accurate kicker in Steelers history. His ACL tear was fucking heartbreaking.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
