I'm always asking this question, and I've still never been given a definition that I can distinguish from a figment of someone's imagination.
Until then, it's:
1) A placeholder for lack of knowledge
2) An unecessary assumption
3) The personification of the argument from ignorance
4) An idealised projection of the self
5) An imaginary friend
