Going serious for a moment, I find the 'comet' explanation extremely implausible.

On the plus side, this star is brighter than 12 magnitude which makes it easy to study, even backyard telescopes can be used. Additionally, since it is sufficiently bright, there are probably going to be observations of it already recorded that can be studied.

The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
