In America then you are taught wrong. Maybe you had a creationist teacher who was forced to teach evolution and did not understand it or deliberately explained it wrongly so you would reject it. Or maybe, as the evidence is suggesting on this thread, you did not understand what you were being taught or desire to understand. As you say yourself, ignorant people are easily controlled.
There is plenty of examples of common ancestors. New examples of our early beginnings are being found all the time. For example, I saw this just today:
