If much of religion is driven by direct hardwiring towards god, then that make it more plausible for religion to die out by correlating religion directly to narrow biologically driven behavioral trait that is subject to narrow evolutionary selection pressure.
But I think religion exists not because hardwiring to god per se as susceptibility to uncritical emotional reliance. Uncritical emotional reliance has broader implications than just makes one susceptible to religion. It also has the potential to increase social cohesion through enhanced mutural emotional dependence. So if religion exploits a trait which affords selection advantages outside of religion, then it is harder to visualize why religion would die out.
