I think that Rubio as nominee with Kasich as his running mate might be the GOP's most potent possible ticket among the crop of contenders. Granted, that's not saying much, but the opportunity for the Republicans to have on the ballot a senator from Florida with possible appeal among Hispanics and a governor from Ohio is about as good as it's going to get for them. They can't possibly win without carrying such swing states.
Edited to add: I only put Rubio as the nominee in this scenario based on each man's position in the polls, not necessarily because I consider him a stronger candidate per se. My opinion of Rubio is that he is an empty suit, and I consider Kasich the more substantial of the two. But perception tends to become reality, and Kasich's current poll numbers aren't helping his prospects. He will have to have some fantastic debate performances to significantly improve his chances.
