Actually, with the increased dependence of rapidly-modernizing China and India on imported oil, we stand to have almost literally half the planet opposed to us, if we try to take SA's oil by force.
Right now, right this very minute, we could easily take them out--that is, reduce them to meaningless squabbling without real power to reach out and ruin our day--with our combined naval and air power, if we ignore the fact that both nations have nuclear weapons.
But as Rhythm pointed out, the cost-benefit analysis isn't anywhere close. That's why, despite the problems with drilling and fracking and tar-sands, we've quietly moved almost entirely to North American sources of oil.
Quote:The United States exported about 4 MMb/d of crude oil and petroleum products in 2014, resulting in net imports (imports minus exports) of about 5 MMb/d in 2014. Net imports accounted for 27% of the petroleum consumed in the United States, the lowest annual average since 1985.

A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost
I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.
