e.x.a.c.t.l.y.
It should have been dirtier, more dangerous, improvised, with no automatic translator. It would have been absolutely epic. We've seen a little bit of that in STVIII, do that, but less campy. They went immediately to a sterile scenario with ST standard tech, and started recycling 30 year old story lines.
Voyager was a clear warning sign for what was coming in Enterprise, I think. A stranded crew on the other side of the galaxy, with no chance of help or even contact with Starfleet AND they have to try to integrate a rival crew into their own ranks to pool their resources. What an amazing set-up for a Star Trek series, sounds like they're really doing something fresh, new and innovative!! What did we get?
Voyager.
It's been over a decade since Enterprise coughed up the last of its lung fluid and stopped moving and over two decades since the end of TNG. The world has changed vastly in that time - but if they can make Doctor Who work in the 21st century, I'm fairly sure they can do the same with Star Trek.
