Hypocrisy always seems to illicit opprobrium. But even if it turns out to be a universal source of condemnation, it remains contingent. It is an insult because we feel it to be one. But if that changes, only those who build up elaborate moral systems which posit objective moral reality will be perplexed.
We are elaborately and quite messily complex organisms, beset by a great many motivations and aversions. Any orderliness you may find there is of your own design.
