If you'd told me 15 years ago what would happen in America over the first decade of the millennium, I'd have said you were crazy. Americans wouldn't stand for it. A stolen election? The president who stole it then lies us into a war? Torture, spying on Americans, rolling back the constitution here and there? No way! He'd be impeached so fast his butt would leave skid marks over the White House lawn!
I remember when we went to war in 2003, I had such a terrible feeling about it but thought if it turned out he had deceived us that he could pretty much write off re-election in 2004.
I also remember the first Gulf War, how a friend of mine who served in the infantry came back with stories about terrified Iraqi soldiers who were so afraid of being tortured and mistreated. He said one Iraqi actually buried himself in the sand, breathing through a straw, to avoid capture. He and I both laughed about how ridiculous that was. We don't torture. What propaganda they must have been fed to believe such a thing.
It's been a depressing decade.
