America wanted to test the effect of nuclear devices on pristine cities, Hiroshima and nagasaki had been spared any kind of bombing previously for that very reason.
The bombs had to be dropped when they were because the russians were just about to declare war on japan and that may have ended the war quickly before the desired test of the weapons.
The first bomb was dropped on hiroshima on the 6th of august 1945 russia declared war on japan on the 8th of august 1945 the nagaski bomb was dropped on the 9th of august 1945.
