Catholics worship Jesus. It was the first group to do it, and half of the population of the planet that worships Jesus is catholics. Yes they venerate Mary too, as well as other saints. That doesn't make them not christians.
You could say that they respect Mary more than Jesus did. When your momma comes calling for you, you drop what you're doing and see what she wants. You don't just say you're hanging out with the guys and ignore her.
