The main reason Afghanistan is screwed up is because the US wanted to maintain unrestricted access to opium.  When the USSR invaded the US saw it as a threat to its opium supply so it got the muslims to fight the commies.  Once the muslims realized that they should be in charge since they did the dying and cut off the opium the US got really pissed off and did what the commies had done.  It invaded the country and set up what it thought was a puppet government.  So today Afghanistan is covered with opium fields and tens of thousands of people are dead and wounded.  In the meantime the drug lords are getting superrich pushing heroin and a cure to the American people.

If the Taliban swore to allow unfettered access to the opium the blue bird of happiness would sing and peace would arrive in a nanosecond.  

American plots are responsible for tossing Afghanistan back into the 4th century.

Afghanistan never left the 4th century. That all sound a little like crazy talk.

Notice how the number of heroin addicts in the US has increased since we have been in Afghanistan.  Rumsfeld ran the Defense Department to ensure control of the opium fields for his company, Gilead Biosciences, which makes a drug to cure hepatitis C.  "Hepatitis C, a deadly virus, is surging; users share needles. So they get the revenues from the drugs and from the cure.  It's a great business model.
