Importance is in the eye of the beholder.
Sports have a place. When taught and executed well, they teach people about trust, teamwork, discipline, how to deal with both success and failure, and all while giving someone a tangible goal to reach for. There's a reason why one of the most common approaches to getting at-risk kids off the streets is to put them in sports. Plus, they're fun and get people off their fat asses. Not everything needs to be of dire importance to have value.
Moreover, as someone who literally cannot do anything athletes do, I personally marvel at the strength, flexibility, and stamina of human bodies at their peak. It's entertaining for me to see it.
Now, I don't think that professional athletes should make $Texas. That's dumb, and merely highlights how messed up our societal priorities are. But to dismiss it entirely because you don't like it is equally as dumb. Sports aren't inherently bad, even if you don't understand their appeal.
