I can only speak of a few people I have met and gotten to know well who are muslim and hajj was not on their agenda. Funny though they played music and were probably more xtian than some of the xtians I have met and know well.
So we can safely assume that music is a definite 'no-no' in Mecca and these other 'holy' sites you speak of?? Random thought: if music was added to the hajj it really WOULD be like Disneyland.
Well yeah, I'd like to call that group of muslims, modern and moderate muslims. Which they have faith is Islam, do their own thing, like my parents but they don't really believe a huge piece of stone which at best is a monument and definitely not a holy and sacred thing that would act as the ear of God to listen to them grant wishes and such. Although relentless pandering to God, prophets and saints (and Imams) is not something you would only find in Islam, but they have the largest circus in the world to put up a show for it. In middle-east, religion or should I say Islam is not at all a personal thing, while in most places in the world it is. Leaders of a middle-eastern country would not base their decisions on the well being and benefit of their people, they base it on what they believe is the will of God.
If you followed the uprising of Iranians since last year, and watched what the supreme leader and his puppets had to say that you will have a better grasp of what I'm trying to say. The Supreme leader believes he is the sole leader of Shia Muslims in the world, and his position is divine as if God came to earth and pointed him as his regent. You can't possibly reason with that sort of faith, they call you infidel and they issue a fatwa and from there you either silence yourself or they will silence you for good.
And no it's not a no-no in mecca, you see putting radicals and extremist aside, a large number of muslims do enjoy music, they have many pop icons, one comes to mind is Nancy Ajram, we Iranians have some pretty world renown folklore icons ourselves like "Mohammad-Reza Shajarian". And their music is or in Shajarian's case was always in national radio and tv. But that's that, you go out in the street with let's say a Metallica t-shirt and they will come and strip you. Few years back I had a Dimmu-Borgir hoodie and they took that during the days of "Tarh-e Amniat-e Ejtemaei" or in English I'd think it will be something like "The Social Security Project" They literally asked me to take it off and when I said I wont, the guy draw a cutter and cut the logo out of it. And said with a sick smirk on his face, now u can keep it.
Most of our awesome music band and singers are out of Iran because the environment is harsh for them to compose, develop and record a music piece is like running completely naked in freezing weather in this waste of land. So they just go, cause outside of this country it doesn't matter what the sing or put in their lyrics, nobody would stop them, it doesn't matter if they rap, rock, metal or whatever, no one will stop them.
I can give you many examples and if these people just come back in Iran, they'll just go to prison: Shajarian, Kiosk, Mohsen Namjoo and many many more...
also forgot to tell you dancing is illegal here.
drink of Alcoholic beverages have many punishments from 100 lashes to execution.
Everything that helps you think out of context and develop a self-contemplation is illegal, like free media. All of world's most famous medias like CNN, BBC, ABC, DW, France 24 you name it their websites are blocked, their satellite channels are inaccessible.
Imagine now, being born and raised in this kind of environment and still have millions of people protesting to this marvelous ways. Refreshing, really.
