You're even older than me (which is really saying something) so I know you've seen:

Violent crime drop steadily since the early 90s,

Survival rates from deadly diseases like cancer and heart disease steadily increase,

Percentages of people buying into religious crap steadily decreasing.

I don't see how "paying attention" justifies pessimism. Just the opposite, in fact. People are definitely flawed but we make steady progress as a whole - except rap 'music' has become popular but you can't have everything.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
