This is one reason why I  have a distaste for the veneration of veterans practiced here in America -- wave that word around and people will do most anything to outpatriot each other.

Viewed from the outside, it certainly seems that way. As long as they can serve as cannon fodder or for some patriotic surge, it's support the troops. But when they end up in the gutter after returning home, noone gives a shit. I've heard that the number of uninsured, untreated and even homeless veterans is supposed to be pretty high.
