It doesn't matter how liberal they say they are in their theology, eventually it comes down to blind faith. That is not an acceptable answer.
You'll never get answers from anyone cloistered in the religious bubble, even less so the higher up the religious food chain you go. You'll get rationalisations, hypothetical moral traps and smokescreen redirects to what Jesus-flavoured deepity they can remember, but no actual answers. The religious world is nothing more than an echo chamber, a positive feedback circuit for confirming and reconfirming the happy little stories in their book, and defending them against the lie of inconvenient reality.
There are no discoveries in religion, no investigation or research. There are only interpretations pronounced centuries ago by people who didn't have any better arguments or justification for them than any idiot with a bible, a webcam and a youtube account. As Colonel Ingersoll put it back in 1898: "The old lady who said there must be a devil, else how could they make pictures that looked exactly like him, reasoned like a trained theologian -like a doctor of divinity."
Some people are okay with that. Others prefer something with a little more substance than none at all.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
