Also, just googled, and 22.8% of US is "religious unaffiliated" and 21% have no religion (3% athiest, 5% agnostic) so there is probably a larger number then the 3% you site, they just don't self label that way.
For some context 12.6% of the US is black, 2.2% is Jewish and they both have some powerful lobbies. If anything it's more surprising that the "no religion" crowd doesn't pull more weight as a minority. Apathy would be my guess.
