I think he never got over his own insecurities growing up, and just like any youth in a gang, he looked for a "greater good" he could create and lead, and unfortunately for humanity, he was successful for a while. Fortunately for humanity, his narcissism got him to bite off more than he could chew. His horrible idea ended up with 50 million deaths on all sides, both military and civilian.
