The first thing to do is to let go of the idea that "atheists" are a group that share any sort of characteristics. They are just people. We've had many, many people come here with this idea and it would be great if you were one of the very few who actually changes their mind. Most people continue to generalise "us" no matter how we try to educate them.

It sounds like you are already an atheist. Anyone who doesn't actively believe that there is a God is an atheist. You don't have to actively believe that there isn't. You sound at least unsure; hence atheist. I'm not trying to win any battles by saying this, just pointing out the facts as I see them. If you're not a theist, you're an atheist. It's no more complex than that. Maybe seeing yourself as part of the group you have a problem with will help you realize you're generalising yourself as well.

Of course, whether you label yourself as such is your choice. But whether or not someone actually is an atheist is not dependent on whether they say they are.
