The message to be sent is to choose a third option, otherwise no message gets sent at all, save that if you choose an odious enough candidate Americans will choose en masse not to play, and you can do whatever the fuck you want.
Not to mention that the real power is in Congress. The message you send by staying home is that if the powers choose a shit candidate and malign the other candidate enough so that they are hated too, they can keep their majority in the legislative body because if you don't show up to vote for President, you can't vote out the shitstains who hamstrung our government for 8 years.
The American congress is insane, remember they read Dr. Seuss books while arguing with one a other. Some of they also wear depends as well!
