I believe it originates from "Prisoner On (his) Majesty's Service, or at least so I've been told.
Possibly, but there's no indication that such terms or acronyms were in use. Another explanation (which I also doubt) is that the word is short for 'pomegranate', as the fair-skinned English were likelier to sunburn, and take on the colour of that fruit.
