I think both sides of this discussion have good points.
The enclosure was clearly insufficient. Cynical though it might sound, relying on visitors to be intelligent and responsible -- yes, even with their own children -- strikes me as a bit naive.
At the same time, being a distracted parent does indeed come with the territory at times. It shouldn't have happened in a place like this, where the dangers of inattention ought to have prompted heightened alertness.
I'm glad the child is okay, and sad the gorilla is dead.
