You did this with the original quote as well. The words "and" and "or" are connecting clauses that are important for stringing several ideas together. Stopping reading after getting to a part you don't like and forgetting the rest isn't very honest.
For example, "and then thanked the people for what they did" changes the entire meaning of your statement, and excludes said statement from what I was talking about.
