Yes, there are a lot of times that people die tragically, but there are also a lot of times that people survive very near death experiences. I don't think being grateful to God for those times when it involves someone you love makes someone a douche. Maybe stupid, in your eyes, since you believe differently. But a douche?
That depends. Maybe if you've had the god who invented cancer trying to steal your son's father you might have a different perspective? Maybe if your child were one of the 275,000 killed in the 04 tsunami you might have a different view?
We're getting to the Problem of Evil, which is very near to me and my loss of faith. At the very best, your god may be described as indifferent ... at the very best.
Your god is alleged to be perfectly moral. What is the purpose of thanking him for not being an asshole? That kinda comes with the territory of being perfectly moral.
For this mother to first thank god and ignore the personnel on site, only to correct her oversight later after public correction, reveals a terribly shallow spirituality, one that asks "What can my god do for me?" but obviously doesn't care to examine the inner workings of the god she worships -- nor accredit the good humans who saved her son's life until her oversight was pointed out.
