I'm certain that if the punishment was so harsh, then child molestation would happen very seldom (one is to think about a few years in prison and other is to think that you put your own life at risk). Moreover, you would deal with the molester once and for all: he will never molest any child again (which the prison cannot ensure).
Whatever. NCIS & Law & Order have probably done more to reduce the murder rate in the USA than the death penalty.
