Because fanatics are highly motivated and likely to vote.
As a moderate, failing to vote gives the outcome to those who do, the extremists.
Yes, I understand that the current political environment is FUBAR (and by current I mean since the dawn of human civilization). My question goes deeper, in that it addresses why we feel we need "leaders" in the first place. I have more to say on this topic, but I do not wish to derail the political purpose of this thread.
