Comparing the two is a ridiculous thing. We are just as dependent on the global economy as you are. Difference is we have enough land and people to be moderately self sufficient. Britain is not, hence the hundreds of years of colonialism.
Britain is not as powerful as you think she is, and you just lost a fuck ton of your bargaining power for trade. You'll still have to follow all of the EU trade rules to export your products, and you'll still have to follow the EU immigration rules for the most part, unless you want to tank the aforementioned trade rates.
This was about nationalism and pride, and not being able to see past your nose. It wasn't for the betterment of Britain, that's for sure. On the other hand, Scotland will probably have another independence referendum and maybe even join the EU on its own.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
