You don't do anything in one fell swoop. You baby step your way to the goal.
And rationally, again, when someone goes into a school and shoots a bunch of kids with a hunting rifle, or pistol, people aren't going to see that as the successful endpoint of the gun control issue. "Finally, kids are being murdered inefficiently with guns! Job well done!" is not going to be the reaction.

Maybe I'm mistaken. In a hypothetical future, where we have the gun laws you want in place. A guy goes into a school, and shoots 30 1st graders, are you going to accept that as the status quo? It's a shame, but that's just the reality we live in now?
