You see - "racism" means attributing stereotypical characteristics to a whole group of people, based on their ethnicity. It does not necessarily mean saying something "mean" about them, or wanting to place them in concentration camps. Whether or not such small displays of small-mindedness as the one you described are worthy of making a fuss about - that's up for debate. But it still IS racism and I don't see how your "real definition" changes that.
So, by definition, an Aussie could call me a "pommy", and that would be considered racist? Or indeed French people as "frogs", or why not the word "limey", for the English. If that is the case, then everyone is racist.
