That was heady stuff.
I once rolled an 01 while trying to defeat a dragon, aiming for its weak spot. The DM didn't see me roll it and so demanded that I reroll. I threw a chair across the room.
I generally trusted my players to roll their own and report it honestly. There was one guy who was substantially "luckier" than a random distribution, he didn't get to roll his own after a point. I always thought that emphasizing the roleplaying aspect over dice rolling made for a better game.
P.S. I probably would have thrown a chair myself.
