Exactly. Which is why it usually comes to a shock later on in the marriage when one partner just isn't in the mood any more. I've even heard of some people in sexless marriages where they haven't had sex with their spouse for like around 6 or 7 years. I don't think I could handle that. The thing that's selfish in that kind of situation is one spouse is effectively saying, "I don't want to have sex with you, but you can't have sex with anyone else, either." I think an open relationship would definitely help out there.
I think that monogamy was created out of need back when there were no cures for STD's. I also think that's where the biblical laws and social mores started against having sex with just anyone. People saw STD's as a punishment from God for having sex with someone they believed they weren't supposed to. That's also why virginity was so highly prized back then, and a man could divorce his wife if she weren't a virgin on the wedding day.
