I will freely admit that my rationales in both cases are based emotionally and can't really be defended logically, so don't ask me to do so.
In all other capital cases, I think life imprisoned on an island, in general population, with livestock, seeding and building supplies flown in every so often so the inmates can assure their own food and shelter, is fine. Maybe give 'em some books, too, I dunno. Make sure the island is beyond swimming distance, and use Coast Guard patrols as training for the CG recruits and midshipmen.
