I find it really weird that people can be shitty to retail workers, don't know whether its because they are generally low paid and the customer feels like they are 'above' them somehow. That makes me more likely to be respectful, and if there is a problem, e.g. with service, I'm more likely to blame the manager than take it out on a worker on the shop floor.
You couldn't really call the people I deal with customers, not like they have a choice, but I've never had anyone be disrespectful to me, even in the face of having to unexpectedly pay tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, or, on occasion, millions of pounds, or potentially facing criminal sanctions. At least, not to my face.
I do also make a point of calling out the manager to praise a worker when I've had good service oo, in addition to tipping for food service (which is not as customary in the UK).
