A combination of racist and sexist bias I guess. Damn stupid whatever the reasoning, and I think she does at least deserve to be fired for it putting someones' life at risk like that.
I definitely think that riddle in the first article posted about the "surgeons' son" rings true. I'll admit I was biased in my thinking of it, I actually thought the surgeon and the father who died in the crash were a male gay couple who had a son together, before I even considered that the surgeon might be a woman. That's pretty deep-seated bias, and I normally consider myself very progressive on feminist issues.
I'd like to think I wouldn't take my bias so far as to question it if a black woman said she was a surgeon in front of me though, that's just crazy and shallow, and dangerous.

"Ironically like the nativist far-Right, which despises multiculturalism, but benefits from its ideas of difference to scapegoat the other and to promote its own white identity politics; these postmodernists, leftists, feminists and liberals also use multiculturalism, to side with the oppressor, by demanding respect and tolerance for oppression characterised as 'difference', no matter how intolerable." - Maryam Namazie
