I think, religions appeal for believers is that they like the idea of "perfect" life, even if its bitter. They like especially that they can possibly even live eternally because they will be fighting the "good fight".
They think, I guess, that if your fighting the "good fight" your automatically right. In sense of morality, some sincere and compassionate believers indeed are in superior position to an average survivalist atheist, because those few theists are driven by fears and duty to make themselves extra caring.
So, its not about proof, its about the question "Does religion make people better persons?".
