Indians pitcher Cody Allen did say something along the lines of "if Bauer had a choice between staying in the game and cutting his finger off, he would have cut his finger off." There are a couple cases of American football players who had badly fractured fingers amputated (missing a single week for recovery) rather than waiting the 2-to-3 months needed for surgery and healing. Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott was the most famous to do this, but it occasionally happens in college (usually a senior with a couple games left in his career). But something tells me the amputation of a finger on Bauer's pitching hand would... significantly reduce his long-term viability at the position.
That being said, he could have borrowed the extra finger from long-time reliever Antonio Alfonseca:
