Demand will only ever increase exponentially, and resources will deplete exponentially over time. The only way the US can break its dependence on foreign oil is to break its dependence on oil. But that's not popular with the American public who want to carry on driving large SUVs and consume as much as possible. This is precisely why the US has to deal with the outside world.
Renewable energy just helps plugs some of the gap.
It's not just America. Every country in the world is in the same situation, except possibly Iceland which has a small population and abundant geothermal energy.
