However there will be quite a few steps between now and then. One being a push to globalize (put all of our resources in a pile) and among other things develop other energy sources. making solar more efficient, next gen batteries, redevelopment of steam propulsion. ect. If we can make any of that work then we will remain or push for further global expansion.
Demand will only ever increase exponentially, and resources will deplete exponentially over time. The only way the US can break its dependence on foreign oil is to break its dependence on oil. But that's not popular with the American public who want to carry on driving large SUVs and consume as much as possible. This is precisely why the US has to deal with the outside world.
Renewable energy just helps plugs some of the gap.
It's not just America. Every country in the world is in the same situation, except possibly Iceland which has a small population and abundant geothermal energy.
Again we currently have the technology to end dependence on oil. if we so desire, the problem is infrastructure. we do not yet have the 'power grid' to support a half a billion cars getting plugged in at night, nor the resources to implement any of the other existing alternative power sources we have that can literally power our everyday lives. So then how do we get it? We milk/tax the current energy source, and use the resources created by the current energy sources to build the support structure needed to supply the new energy source.
But, again.. At our current rate of decline the US can no longer do this alone. as doubling down on obama care and the subsequent one payer obam-inton medicare system will bankrupt the united states.
