Yes, yes, ffs yes. It was a campaign of hate and fear, and that didn't hurt Trumps chances at all, but the people whom he appealed to had a legitimate complaint and they gave a giant f-u to both parties on account of it. Trumps not a conservative, they didn't go conservative. They had plenty of dog whistle blowing conservatives to choose from....the government -has- fucked the common man and the liberal elite -has not- done anything to stop it...they;ve been complacent and complicit....and then...they thought they might win this one without even talking to the people they needed to win over.
There is a very short window here, before a narrative about it being the other guys fault (amusing..considering that you're giving the trumpsters shit for this very thing) that this terrible thing happened calcifies and you become doomed to repeat it next cycle.
