Welcome to history. It's always inevitable in hindsight. That's why it happens.
Which makes you wonder what unthinkable things will happen next which will be seen as being inevitable by historians.
To figure that out, maybe we should look at the history books and compare what's happening now with the most similar situation in the past.
Society doesn't arbitrarily flip flop. Trends happen over many years until something forces society to take a different direction. Look at the general trend of the last couple of decades and you can extrapolate to a point where it it will try something else.
The trends towards authoritarian government and corporatism have been happening since the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and they still have a way to go.
