The situation is bad because fear mongering like that led to the rebirth of nationalism, complete with instrumentalised religion and the extreme right cropping up everywhere like turds in a clogged toilet. They need fear, they need scapegoats, and you only have to replace islam or muslim in the speeches with jew to see where this is going.
Soi, yes, the secular system of collaboration between countries is threatened. But the danger's coming from the right. Very similar to the 30ies of the last century. Complete with instrumentalising the economic crisis. Before 2008 rightwingers were on the fringe in most countries.
