In med school, MD's get trained to focus more on the illness/condition. This one is the colon cancer, the next one is the diabetic and then we'll go on to the COPD case. They are seen in terms of the disease/treatment. I'm not sue that they could make it with out that sort of detachment. 

This does not make them uncaring or unfeeling, just fosters that appearance.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
