@OP: It's really not that hard to know when a person dies, and it is almost impossible to not-feel the change when one is holding that persons hand. That feeling, strong emotions and belief together are more than enough to cause hallucinations.
As for your mom, start maintaining a journal of whenever she gets "a bad feeling", then note how many of those checks out. Also look for environmental cues, like if you have a very sick family member and your mom knows that, then notice if the "bad feeling" doesn't happen after a few days of suddenly not getting any news.
